Trigger warning:

The following text contains the overlooked, invaluable lived experiences of countless humans with modern Western science’s hegemony over patients and humanity, its inherent dehumanization, and its often disregarded systemic limits.

Proceeding further is left at the reader’s discretion.

Modern scientific progress is built on positionality:

  • Colonial math, grounded in European binary logic:
Indigenous genocide + savage exploitation + smallpox vaccines + anti-depressant + cancer immunotherapy = Net Positive
  • Global majority rationality, grounded in human dignity:
No “gift” built on graves is progress. It’s violence with receipts.

You wouldn’t believe how many peers have said — to my modern-Western-science-racialized-Black face — that we shouldn’t forget what colonization “did well,” even if it was brutal.
And then they claim to care about patients.
Patients are humans.

Whenever some peers wondered why committed patient partners should be paid for their invaluable work in R&D, I remember: modern Western science is the epitome of European binary logic — dehumanizing by design, without empathy or self-awareness. We’ve even arrived at the age of Automated European Binary Logic — Artificial Intelligence. It’s as if the latter were universal and objective, not tied to a cultural context.

These well-meaning peers don’t innovate with humanity but for it — believing that a 19th-century creative process won’t repeat the past, but somehow build the future.
That’s modern Western science magical thinking.
And I wish more people saw how deeply it’s stifling innovation over time.

If you’re a scientist, when was the last time you caught yourself in uncritical European binary logic?
And if you rarely do — what does that mean about you?

We live in a time when many peers feel that modern Western science is under attack — fighting funding cuts, censorship, and climate denial.
But if you’ve never questioned its colonial foundations — what are you defending? What story of science are you standing in?
Who shapes it — and who does it center?

What kind of relationship do you have with science — and what kind do you want?
How much are you ready to build science that authoritarians can’t co-opt when it means losing power to change position?

Reality often goes as we wish when we live in theory, protected in the sanitized walls of a controlled lab where binaries reign so deep that they shape our subconscious. It’s not where patients live. They never did.
How much will you dare to step out and build authentic science with humanity?

There is a field beyond right and wrong, I will meet you there (Rumi).

One response to “Magical Thinking Won’t Save Modern Western Science. Dignity Will.”

This reflection is part of my ongoing work to reimagine what science can be when we stop mistaking power for progress.

If you’re feeling defensive — I understand. I once did too.
But dignity isn’t a threat to science. It’s what makes it worth doing.

🧭 I’m building a science that centers empathy, not ego.
🌍 One that listens to the global majority, not just the global North.
🧪 One where positionality is power — not bias to be erased.

If any of that resonates (or unsettles you), I’d love to know:
When was the last time your idea of “good science” truly shifted?
